Optimizing seed injection as a seagrass restoration method

چکیده
Due to the major declines of seagrasses worldwide, there is an urgent need for effective restoration methods and strategies. In Dutch Wadden Sea, intertidal seagrass has proven very challenging, despite numerous trials with different methods. Recently, however, first field trial performed a newly developed “dispenser injection seeding” method (DIS) resulted in record-high plant densities seed recruitment. Here, we present further development methodology consequently improved results. During two consecutive growing seasons, honed seeding technique experimentally investigated how depth (2/4 cm), density (25/100 injects/m2), amount (2/20 seeds/inject) affected annual Zostera marina. We found that all variables had significant impact on establishment. Seeding deeper (4 cm) largest positive effect restored densities, while lowered (2 The optimized DIS method, combined altered placement hole, 50-fold increase (from approximately 1 57 plants/m2) simultaneous recruitment 0.3 11.4%). These improvements stem from method's ability counteract bottleneck, where seeds are lost through hydrodynamic forcing. methodological described here important steps toward restoring self-sustaining populations future our study demonstrates high potential seed-based restoration.

A unified method for optimizing linear image restoration filters
Image restoration from degraded images lies at the foundation of image processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision, so it has been extensively studied. A large number of image restoration filters have been devised so far. It is known that a certain filter works excellently for a certain type of original image or degradation. However, the same filter may not be suitable for other images...

In a series of experiments, seeds from a temperate seagrass species, Zostera nigricaulis collected in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia were exposed to a range of salinities (20 PSU pulse/no pulse, 25 PSU, 30 PSU, 35 PSU), temperatures (13 °C, 17 °C, 22 °C), burial depths (0 cm, 1 cm, 2 cm) and site specific sediment characteristics (fine, medium, coarse) to quantify their impacts on germin...
متن کاملOptimizing Seed Selection for Fuzzing
Randomly mutating well-formed program inputs or simply fuzzing, is a highly effective and widely used strategy to find bugs in software. Other than showing fuzzers find bugs, there has been little systematic effort in understanding the science of how to fuzz properly. In this paper, we focus on how to mathematically formulate and reason about one critical aspect in fuzzing: how best to pick see...
متن کاملSeagrass Restoration Enhances “Blue Carbon” Sequestration in Coastal Waters
Seagrass meadows are highly productive habitats that provide important ecosystem services in the coastal zone, including carbon and nutrient sequestration. Organic carbon in seagrass sediment, known as "blue carbon," accumulates from both in situ production and sedimentation of particulate carbon from the water column. Using a large-scale restoration (>1700 ha) in the Virginia coastal bays as a...
متن کاملOptimal seed solver: optimizing seed selection in read mapping
MOTIVATION Optimizing seed selection is an important problem in read mapping. The number of non-overlapping seeds a mapper selects determines the sensitivity of the mapper while the total frequency of all selected seeds determines the speed of the mapper. Modern seed-and-extend mappers usually select seeds with either an equal and fixed-length scheme or with an inflexible placement scheme, both...
